On 30,000 pesos a month nothing you buy warns you about anything. Five hundred pesos will not change your week, so it leaves no trace, and the budget constraint that used to work as an alarm stops going off. Organizing your personal finances at this income is not about cutting, because everything fits. It is about replacing a signal your own income switched off.
Where 30,000 pesos a month sits in the ENIGH
A personal income of 30,000 pesos a month is more than an entire average Mexican household brings in. INEGI's 2024 ENIGH measured that household current income at 25,955 pesos a month, and that figure already adds up everyone living in the house.
By education it lands near the top of what the survey found: the highest average monthly monetary income of the whole sample belonged to people with postgraduate studies, at 31,584 pesos.
That does not make it a high income, and it is worth saying so. Households in the top decile averaged 78,698 pesos a month. The accurate word for 30,000 is comfortable, and comfort has a side effect almost nobody mentions.
The budget constraint was your warning system
Running out is information. When the money does not stretch you find out the same day, with no tracking, no apps and no effort: the card is declined, the paycheck is too far away, the purchase gets postponed. It is an uncomfortable alarm system and an extraordinarily effective one, and it works precisely because it hurts.
On 30,000 pesos a month that alarm stops firing. Not because you spend better, but because the same purchase weighs less.
10,000 a month
20,000 a month
30,000 a month
An expense worth 1.7 % of your month produces no reaction at all. It is not debated, not remembered and not recorded. It passes the filter by definition, because the filter was the pain.
Where does the money go when nothing hurts?
At this income the money goes into decisions that were each individually correct. Every one of them fit. The trouble is that the filter is applied one purchase at a time and the month charges you for all of them at once.
Twenty 500-peso purchasesThe month: 30,000
Not one weighed more than 1.7 %. Together they are 10,000 pesos: a third of the month.
None of this is an argument against spending. It is an argument against believing a purchase can be judged on its own: at 30,000 pesos a month, the individual verdict on each one stopped being useful and an aggregate one is needed.
The number that works here: what stays
Your savings rate is the only indicator that works without memory. It is income minus spending, divided by income, and you get it from two bank balances and a subtraction. It never asks what you bought, it does not collapse after four days, and it does not depend on you having written anything down.
The ENIGH averages give a reference point. A Mexican household had current income of 25,955 pesos a month and current spending of 20,436: the difference is 5,519 pesos, or 21.3 %.
The short version: at this income a good month and a bad one feel so similar that you can no longer tell them apart by how they felt. You tell them apart by what was left.
What a savings rate will not tell you
A savings rate answers how much and never answers what on. A 25 % month could be a disciplined one or an expensive one rescued by extra income, and from the outside they look identical. It also cannot separate the spending you meant to do from the spending that slipped past.
The ENIGH figure, besides, is the gap between two national averages, not any real household's savings. Treat it as a scale, not a target.
For the other question, the one about where it went, there is no shortcut: you have to know what happened. On 20,000 pesos a month that was already the central problem, and on 10,000 it never even comes up, because arithmetic rules everything there.
Comfort does not solve money. It only turns off the light that used to warn you.
Questions
- Is 30,000 pesos a month a good salary in Mexico?
- It is a comfortable income rather than a high one. It is more than an entire Mexican household earns on average, which the 2024 ENIGH put at 25,955 pesos a month counting every member of the house. At the same time, households in the top decile averaged 78,698 pesos a month, so it sits well below the top of the distribution.
- Why do I spend more when I earn more?
- Because the signal that used to stop you was something not fitting, and that signal disappears once everything fits. A 500-peso expense is 5 % of a 10,000-peso income and 1.7 % of a 30,000-peso one: the same purchase stops being felt, stops being remembered and stops being argued about.
- What is a savings rate and how do you calculate it?
- It is the share of your income still there at the end of the month: income minus spending, divided by income. Using the 2024 ENIGH averages, a Mexican household had current income of 25,955 pesos a month and current spending of 20,436, leaving 5,519 pesos, or 21.3 %. Its advantage is that it takes two balances and no memory of what you bought.
- Is a savings rate useful if I don't track my spending?
- It tells you how much, never what on. It is a good first indicator because it requires no record keeping, but it cannot tell a disciplined month from an expensive one rescued by extra income. For the question of where the money went there is no shortcut that avoids writing it down.
